Paul Cornu, a French bicycle maker, invented the first aircraft capable of achieving manned vertical flight in 1907. Cornu’s helicopter hovered about a foot off the ground and maintained the historic flight for approximately 20 seconds. Not too impressive by today’s standards, but it was the beginning of an era that would see extensive development over the next century and beyond.
The helicopter is a very complex piece of equipment filled with many moving parts. Although the maintenance is intensive and operating costs are high, the maneuverability of the helicopter enables it to perform many tasks not possible with any other type of aircraft.
